Perform analyses, design, testing and/or evaluation of one or more complex components of analytical systems requiring ingenuity and creativity. Develop new techniques of optimizing the efficiency of these systems through automation or improved man-machine interactive software modules. Evaluate commercially available system components for processing speed, quality and cost, interfacing with the engineers and designers of these systems as required. Interface with product generation personnel to resolve problems with production system operations. Devise new and original solutions to problems, work with engineers. Provide technical guidance to staff.
Job Requirements:
Responsibilities include:
• Contribute to SOFIA Systems Engineering Management Plan
• Monitor and monthly report Technical Performance Measures
• Write Requirements Specifications for SOFIA Science and Mission Operations Center (SSMOC) and SSMOC Ground Facilities
• Assist in the development of requirements with a large, geographically dispersed team, enter the requirements into the tracking systems, and write specifications for the development of SOFIA’s documentation.
• Participate in Continuous Risk Management of technical risks
• Participate in writing the SOFIA Science and Mission Operations Verification and Validation (V&V) Plan
• Write integrated systems test procedures
• Review and approve test procedures written by others
• Participate in integrated telescope/science instrument/ground facility V&V tests
• Document and review V&V test results
In support of the Stratospheric Observatory for Infrared Astronomy (SOFIA) Project at NASA Ames Research Center, we are seeking candidates for a systems engineering position with a mechanical, Electrical/Electronics, test engineering, or an optics background.
Required Skills / Qualifications:
• B.A/B.S. in Engineering, Math, Physics or equivalent experience is required
• 7 years related Engineering Experience
• Knowledge of the fundamental principles, concepts, and techniques in systems engineering.
• Experience in mechanical, Electrical/Electronics, test engineering or optics required
Preferred Skills / Qualifications:
Strong verbal and written communication skills
• Risk management experience a plus
• A background or interest in Astronomy is helpful but not required
Systems Engineering experience at NASA or within the aerospace industry desirable
